Is Bad Girl Bang Mascara Really ‘Out Of This World’?

11th May 2018

So a few months ago, every influencer who was any influencer was invited on a PR trip to an assortment of v exotic destinations with Benefit to reveal their latest release. And my f’ing god it was intense.

I was watching Victoria’s (In The Frow) Instagram stories like my life depended on it, just hoping for a glimpse of the product that was worthy of such a reception.

So when Bad Girl Bang mascara was revealed I was, shall we say, slightly underwhelmed. Benefit have some cracking mascaras already, and truth be told, I wanted my mind blown with some revolutionary item.

The product boasts about ‘out of this world volume’ with a ‘gravity defying formula’ that is meant to last for 36 hours. So when I received a sample in my March Birchbox I needed to know if the statements were true.

Initial thoughts

Okay. They were absolutely not lying when they said about volume. Jesus, Mary and Joseph. With one swipe of the wand I had noticeable volume, length and intensity. However, the formula is incredibly wet. Meaning that if you’re not careful you’re going to end up with about 3 clumped eyelashes and calling it a look.

No mascara

I have quite long and curled lashes even when they’re doing their own thing. So we’ll bare this in mind with the results.

First coat

I kid you not, this was probably only 10 swipes of the wand. And gentle swipes may I add. I didn’t really work the product into my lashes as it would have not been a cute look. There’s noticeable volume for sure without feeling like my lashes were being dragged down under the weight. The length is also pretty impressive and I am absolutely here for how dark my lashes look.

It took around 5 minutes for my lashes to feel dry and ready to go. However, I could have easily just stuck to the one coat.

Second coat

As I always use two coats of mascara, in the interest of fairness, I needed to try it out. It started to turn into a bit of a matted mess, and the more I tried to fix it the worse it seemed to get.

The formula grabs onto every single lash you have, however it gives zero shits about any kind of separation. All of them are getting squished together whether you like it or not.

I personally wouldn’t use a second coat of Bad Girl Bang. This is the point where I would use either a clean mascara wand to brush out the lashes, or a mascara that is on its way out so you can build on the length and separation.

Throughout the day

The mascara really did hold up, the volume and length didn’t diminish through the day. The intensity held its own, there was no flaking, however there was a bit of eyelid transfer as the day progressed, however there aren’t many mascaras that can claim that they don’t with my oily AF lids.

Final thoughts

For me personally, I probably wouldn’t rush to buy the full size version. As it can so easily go wrong, and your lashes now reside at 123 Clumpy Avenue. However, if you’re into the thick lash look and you need some volume on your eyelids – she’s your queen.

All in all Benefit, you set out to achieve out of this world volume with zero gravity. And that is what you’ve accomplished. I tip my hat to you.

Yeah…I did not like it one bit. I thought I was just me who thought it grabbed at every single lash, but seems not. In true honestly, I am not that much of a mascara user as I tend to touch my eyes and lashes a lot and rub my eyes…plus the weight used to get to me. Now, I am using it a few times per month or even more often if I have events or something to attend, but still disliked this one a lot. Again, I am not a great authority on this topic, but Better than Sex from TooFaced or even Roller Lash from Benefit are absolutely amazing compared to this one. hope that made sense.

Doesn’t sound like one for me, they annoy me when they clump easily, but that is an impressive change with one coat. I have the same problem with oily lids, especially under my eyes I normally seem to end up with a black ring at the end of the day!

  3. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about this mascara, and I’m not sure if I want to give it a go!!! haha! Loved the review xoxo

  4. Gotta say I get the same result with Essence mascara that is so much more affordable. Benefit is kinda a not really “must have” brand, I think they do great eye brow stuff, but other than that I’m kinda not excited about their collection. xx
